An Alabama was arrested Monday after police said he severely beat his girlfriend’s 5-year-old child.

Ryan Craig Rezek, 29, of Hartselle, Alabama, was arrested after following up on a welfare check to a residence after someone called the police after being concerned for the child’s safety.

Upon arriving, investigators observed at the child had been severely beaten.

The child was taken to the hospital for treatment, and Rezek was arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse.

Rezek was being detaiend at the Morgan County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

“Child abuse is real and most times it takes someone to notice something and contact the police,” a spokesman for the Hartselle police wrote on social media. “The Hartselle Police Department is very grateful to the caller for bringing this matter to our attention.”
