Investigators are working to determine how a man’s badly decomposed body wound up along a roadside, Alabama sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday.

The grisly discovery happened at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday when Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to Slope Drive in Mulga, Alabama, after a passerby spotted the body.

Deputies said they believe the body belonged to a male, but that the body was in the later stages of decomposition.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office was called in to positively identify the body and determine a cause of death.
