An Alabama state trooper became ill shortly after a suspect he was taking to jail also fell ill and needed emergency medical help, state police said.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency agents said the incident happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday when a state trooper was transporting a suspect to the Macon County Jail. The suspect became ill and emergency services were called.

Naloxone was given to the person who was then taken to an Opelika hospital.

Naloxone is given to patients to reverse the effects of an overdoes due to narcotics overdoses.

Shortly after the naloxone was given, the trooper fell ill and was also taken to the hospital.

The growing use of fentanyl has caused a number of law enforcement officers to become inadvertently exposed to the substance and become ill.
