Alabama sheriff’s deputies ratcheted down security Friday morning after learning two murder suspects allegedly planned to overpower deputies and escape custody as they were taken to a court appearance.

Walker County Sheriff’s Office deputies said security around the courthouse was extra tight Friday morning as father Corey Mahaffey and his 16-year-old son, Kaison Mahaffey, appeared in court to face charged that they murdered Matthew Douglas Perrigan, 32.

“The reason for heightened security was due to communication concerning the possibility of an attempt to escape, and to ensure the safety of the public,” Walker County Sheriff’s Office officials posted on social media.

“The two allegedly planned to overtake officers during the transport and flee the area,” deputies wrote.

The pair are held at the Walker County Jail with no bond and their case will be presented to a grand jury.

The victim was shot January 19 and reportedly occurred over a dispute involving an automobile robbery.
