Alabama Skies: Severe weather expected across the state today

The system we’ve been expecting to pack a punch will arrive today. Our friends in Mississippi already had some severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings last night, and that threat is expected to continue into Alabama today.

Severe thunderstorms are possible across most of the state today, along with heavy rain and strong winds. When they move out, temperatures will drop quickly as the strong cold front moves through.

The severe threat will begin about 11 a.m. along the western edge of the state and continue through 8 p.m. on the eastern side. Western Alabama is under a Level 3 risk with tornadoes and damaging winds up to 70 miles per hour. Eastern Alabama is under a Level 2 risk with tornadoes possible and damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour.

North Alabama

Showers and thunderstorms with a high near 74. Some storms could be severe. Tonight, showers and storms continue with a low around 36.

Central Alabama

Showers and thunderstorms with some storms severe. High of 75. Tonight, showers and thunderstorms continue with a low of 39.

South Alabama

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon. Some storms could be severe. High near 80. Showers and storms continue tonight with a low of 44.

Gulf Coast

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon. Some storms could be severe. High of 77. Showers and storms continue tonight with a low of 48.
