Student train conductor killed in railway accident, police report

A train conductor in training was killed early Tuesday morning in a rail accident involving two trains, a TV station reported.

WBRC-TV reported the trainee was killed at approximately 1 a.m. around 32nd Street and Carolina Avenue.

The TV station said police told them the victim was a train conductor in training, but did not immediately identify the victim.

Train owner Norfolk Southern issued a statement on the incident:

“Norfolk Southern is grieving the loss of a member of our team today,” the statement reads. “Our hearts go out to his loved ones during this extremely difficult time, and we are working to provide grief counsellors to his colleagues at our nearby facilities. An investigation is underway and company leadership is on-site to provide support.”

Police and investigators from Norfolk Southern rail were on scene, the station reported.
