Emergency officials were assessing storm damage early Wednesday after severe storms tore across the state overnight and killed at least two people and injured many more.

In Montgomery County, emergency officials told WSFA-TV that two people had been killed other peopel injured in the Flatwood Community.

A suspected tornado apparently struck the area at approximately 3 a.m., the National Weather Service Office in Birmingham reported.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials reported that trees and powerlines were down across parts of Montgomery County forcing the closure of a number of roads including Lower Wetumpka Road, Coosada Ferry Road. and Williams Drive.

ALEA also reported the following roads within Elmore County have also been reported to have trees and power lines down Dark Corners Road, Friendship Road and Rifle Range Road.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates accordingly.
