COVID vaccine will never be mandated, Alabama governor says

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey managed to stir up COVID-19 divisiveness Thursday by declaring the state of Alabama would never mandate a COVID-19 vaccination for school children.

Her comments came one day after a CDC panel voted to recommend putting the COVID vaccine on a list of vaccines available for children.

“Here in Alabama, the parents make decisions when it comes to their children’s health care. We do NOT mandate the covid shot for kids – nor will we ever,” Ivey wrote on Twitter.

Currently, Alabama does not require children to be vaccinated against COVID but does require several other vaccines — including measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox and polio — be taken to attend school.

Online comments to Ivey’s tweet were quick and sometimes vicious.
