An Alabama woman killed by a car in the parking lot of a Walmart store was struck on purpose, authorities said.

Decatur police said evidence indicates a man pulled his car into a parking space and sat idling until Sherry Sain walked behind his vehicle, then accelerated in reverse until the vehicle struck her, according to a statement posted on the police department’s Facebook page.

“He was slowly pulling out of the parking lot, out of the parking space and the closer he got to her — it was like he gassed it,” witness Amy Brown told WAAY-TV.

Sain died outside the Walmart Neighborhood Market store, police said, and the driver was arrested trying to flee. Police identified the suspect as 38-year-old Preston Lamar Nelson of Huntsville, who was booked into the Morgan County jail on a charge of murder.

The police department said investigators have found no connection between the victim and the driver who struck her on Thursday.

Jail booking information for Nelson posted online did not indicate whether he had an attorney representing him.
