Police say a federal inmate was gunned down in a targeted killing outside an Alabama prison reentry facility.

Al.com reports 47-year-old Larry Taylor was shot Saturday morning in Birmingham. He was taken to a hospital by private vehicle, where he was pronounced dead.

Birmingham police Lt. Rod Mauldin said Taylor was targeted by a gunman as he was leaving the facility. The assailant approached Taylor in a parking lot, fired several shots, then fled in a white sedan, Mauldin said.

The shooting happened outside the Keeton Correctional Facility, which is operated by Keeton Corrections for the federal Bureau of Prisons. The center aims to help inmates leaving prison to re-enter society.
