A fire that broke out Tuesday at an Alabama apartment building trapped residents inside and injured nine people, five of whom were children.

The fire broke out midday at The Lory of Hoover Apartments.

Images shared on social media showed heavy flames and smoke emanating from the building and some residents leaping from windows as fire approached them inside the building.

Birmingham area media report that a total of nine people were injured in the blaze. Five of those people were children.

The fire was controlled within approximately one hour of firefighters arriving on the scene.

The exact cause of the fire and the nature and severity of the injuries were not immediately known.
