A teen missionary remains hospitalized in Birmingham after he was shot multiple times at a church event last week.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Elder Michael Fauber, 18, is in serious condition but is stable and improving, the church’s media relations manager Sam Penrod told AL.com.

The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Birmingham Stake Center, which is a meeting place for the church in southern Jefferson County. Fauber was playing basketball at a weekly event in the center when he was shot multiple times by a visitor who came to play with them, the news outlet reported.

The shooter, who has not been identified and is still at large, played a few games with the group before he attacked, seemingly unprovoked, Jefferson County Sheriff Deputy Chief David Agee told AL.com. Investigators have credible accounts that the suspect ran from the building, Agee said.

“This was the first time they’ve seen him at this location,’’ Agee said, adding that it didn’t appear anyone knew the suspect.
