A suspected burglar is in the hospital after he was beaten by an Alabama homeowner who caught him stealing from her property Monday night.

Mobile police say the woman grabbed an ax handle and started beating the man after she drove up to her house on Rudder Road in Mobile and found the suspect and two other men stealing from her property.

Police say the woman grabbed the ax handle when one of the suspects reached into his pocket.

Witnesses said they could hear screams from the woman as she fought off the burglars. Two of the burglary suspects took off running as the woman continued to beat the other suspect.

The burglary suspect reportedly had drugs and an airsoft gun with him when he was caught.

Police said the burglary suspect was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police are still searching for two other suspects who got away.
