Two Alabama parents are accused of using duct tape and zipties to tie up at least one of their children.

AL.com reports that Markeith Dynard Jefferson, 35, of Helena, and Briana Janice Butler, 30, of Center Point, have been indicted on abuse charges. Jefferson is charged with one count of aggravated child abuse and Butler is charged with two counts.

The indictments were issued on Dec. 11, 2020, according to court records made public Monday.

Jefferson was initially arrested on Aug. 4, 2020, and was released from jail after posting a $20,000 bond. Butler was not arrested until the indictments were handed down. She was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Thursday and released the same day after posting $15,000.

Court documents say the victim or victims, who are between the ages of 7 and 12 years old, were beaten with a belt and/or extension cord and tied to the bed or door with duct tape and zipties. Jefferson is also accused of submerging a child underwater. The abuse reportedly occurred on multiple occasions.
