A two-year-old has died after someone opened fire into his house Thursday night.

Al.com reports that Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Friday has identified the child as Major Turner. He was 2.

Turner and his mother were wounded when shots were fired into a residence in Birmingham, police said.

Turner was reportedly shot in the neck and taken to Children’s of Alabama. He was pronounced dead at 2:45 a.m.

The mother was reportedly hospitalized, but the injuries didn’t appear life-threatening.

The gunfire happened Thursday night in a public housing complex on the Birmingham’s west side, Al.com reported.

Officers arrived to find the mother and 2-year-old boy wounded, Sgt. Rod Mauldin said.

Mauldin said the victims were inside their apartment when someone from the outside opened fire.

Neighbors say they heard at least eight to 10 shots.

Police say they’re uncertain what led to the shooting and are in need of people to come forward.
