A woman was killed early Saturday in a crash that sent her vehicle airborne and hurtling into an Alabama ravine.

According to local news reports, Tuscaloosa law enforcement and emergency responders attempted to rescue the woman after an off-duty officer saw the vehicle fall into a ravine at 2:44 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was identified as Angela Chandler, 38, of Cottondale.

An investigation into the incident indicates that Chandler had been traveling south on Interstate 359 and tried to make a left turn east onto Skyland Boulevard when her 2017 Honda Accord struck the front passenger’s side of an SUV that was stopped at a traffic light. Afterward,  Chandler’s vehicle struck a curb and became airborne.  The vehicle fell into in Cypress Creek, about 50 feet below the roadway, where officials tried to rescue Chandler.

Chandler had already died from the injuries she sustained in the crash, before emergency responders could rescue her.
