The chairman of the five-member Jackson County Commission has resigned a day after the other four members revealed an investigation into improper video surveillance at the courthouse in Scottsboro.

The commission voted Tuesday to accept the resignation of chairman Tim Guffey, news outlets reported, but a statement read during a meeting didn’t mention a reason for his departure.

The move came one day after four commissioners other than Guffey issued a statement saying the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency was investigating “inappropriate surveillance” of a worker at the courthouse. A previously unknown video camera was discovered on Dec. 15 and has since been removed.

“The commissioners take this allegation very seriously and are providing full cooperation with the investigation,” said the statement.

Gov. Kay Ivey will appoint a permanent replacement for Guffey, whose resignation took effect immediately. Vice chair Jason Venable took over on an interim basis.
