A Mississippi man who fled to a Utah campground after deputies found his wife’s charred remains in metal bucket was found guilty of her death Friday.

Fifteenth District Attorney Hal Kittrell said Bowman, now 61, was found guilty of second-degree murder during a weeklong trial, which began on Oct. 19 and was held in Marion County.

Kitrell said the conviction can carry a sentence between 20 to 40 years. Had Bowman been convicted of first-degree murder, he could have faced a penalty of up to life in prison, Kittrell said. Bowman was also convicted of tampering with physical evidence due to the actions he took with the remains of his wife, Kathleen Bowman.

In June of 2018, Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department went out to the Bowman home for a welfare check when they discovered Kathleen’s charred remains in a metal bucket.

Bowman was on the run for more than two weeks after the remains of his wife were found at their home.

The U.S. Marshals Service was able to track Bowman to a campground in Bear Lake, Utah, after a tip was received from a park ranger. U.S. Marshals Service personnel used a boat on the lake to survey the campsite where Bowman was suspected to be, and once his identity was confirmed he was taken into custody.

Kittrell said Bowman will be sentenced on Nov. 23.

The trial was a logistical challenge for the prosecuting team due to the many witnesses and agencies involved in the case, which included the U.S. Marshals who tracked Bowman to Utah where he hid for about two weeks.

“Without that teamwork we would not have been able to get a conviction,” Kittrell said about the circumstantial aspect of the case.

Sheriff David Allison said he would like to thank his team for their hard work in bringing Bowman to justice, and he was pleased with the outcome since it can provide some closure to the family. Allison said he would also like to thank the other law enforcement agencies who helped bring Bowman back to Pearl River County after he fled.
