State officials: $300 unemployment checks expected by end of week

Officials say the $300 checks will be in the mail by the end of the week.

The checks will go to more than 100,000 Alabamians who lost their jobs due to COVID-19 and are receiving unemployment benefits from the Alabama Department of Labor.

That $300 boost comes from the federal Lost Wages Assistance grant and will be paid in addition to the money Alabama pays in unemployment benefits.

ADOL says you must have a weekly benefit amount of $100 dollars to qualify for the $300 boost. Payments will be retroactive to August first.

ADOL says there’s no need to apply for the extra $300 dollar payments. If you are eligible, they will just add the payment.

FEMA approved Alabama’s Lost Wages Assistance Grant application for the first three weeks of August. The state already applied for the week of August 22.

ADOL says how long the $300 benefit lasts will depend on how long the funding lasts. Early estimates indicated approximately five weeks.
