An Alabama man has been charged with capital murder in a Sunday shooting at a West Alabama apartment complex.

Devonte Montel Hinton, 25, was being held without bail at the Tuscaloosa County Jail on one count of capital murder.

Capt. Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit, told the Tuscaloosa News that Hinton is accused of killing a man Sunday at Sun Valley Apartments on 36th Avenue East.

Tuscaloosa police were called to the apartment complex at about 2 p.m. to investigate a shooting. Before officers arrived on the scene, Justin Lanier Douglas, 35, had been taken to DCH Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

A second person was hospitalized Sunday with non-life-threatening injuries. Three other people were detained for questioning.

Kennedy said the case was still under investigation and did not reveal information about a motive nor why Hinton was charged with capital murder.
