Workers in Jefferson County made a gruesome discovery Tuesday afternoon, Birmingham media report.

Bessemer police were called to the scene after a decomposing body was found in a manhole, CBS 42 reported.

AL.com reported that the body appeared to be a female, but that investigators said it was so decomposed the gender could not be determined. An autopsy will have to be performed to determine a possible identification and cause of death.
